Self-consistent theory of turbulent transport in the solar tachocline II. Tachocline confinement

چکیده
Aims. We provide a consistent theory of the tachocline confinement (or anisotropic momentum transport) within an hydrodynamical turbulence model. The goal is to explain helioseismological data, which show that the solar tachocline thickness is at most 5% of the solar radius, despite the fact that, due to radiative spreading, this transition layer should have thickened to a much more significant value during the sun’s evolution. Methods. Starting from the first principle with the physically plausible assumption that turbulence is driven externally (e.g. by plumes penetrating from the convection zone), we derive turbulent (eddy) viscosity in the radial (vertical) and azimuthal (horizontal) directions by incorporating the crucial effects of shearing due to radial and latitudinal differential rotations in the tachocline. Results. We show that the simultaneous presence of both shears induces effectively a much more efficient momentum transport in the horizontal plane than in the radial direction. In particular, in the case of strong radial turbulence (driven by overshooting plumes from the convection zone), the ratio of the radial to horizontal eddy viscosity is proportional to A−1/3, where A is the strength of the shear due to radial differential rotation. In comparison, in the case of horizontally driven turbulence, this ratio becomes of order −ǫ2, with negative radial eddy viscosity. Here, ǫ (≪ 1) is the ratio of the radial to latitudinal shear. The resulting anisotropy in momentum transport could thus be sufficiently strong to operate as a mechanism for the tachocline confinement against spreading.

Results. For reasonable parameter values, the turbulent eddy viscosity i...

Aims. To understand the fundamental physical processes important for the evolution of solar rotation and distribution of chemical species, we provide theoretical predictions for particle mixing and momentum transport in the stably stratified tachocline. Methods. By envisioning that turbulence is driven in the tachocline, we compute the amplitude of turbulent flow, turbulent particle diffusiviti...

We present a detailed numerical study of the Gough & McIntyre model for the solar tachocline. This model explains the uniformity of the rotation profile observed in the bulk of the radiative zone by the presence of a large-scale primordial magnetic field confined below the tachocline by flows originating from within the convection zone. We attribute the failure of previous numerical attempts at...
متن کاملMagnetic confinement of the solar tachocline
Two distinct classes of magnetic confinement models exist for the solar tachocline. The “slow tachocline” models are associated with a large-scale primordial field embedded in the radiative zone. The “fast tachocline” models are associated with an overlying dynamo field. I describe the results obtained in each case, their pros and cons, and compare them with existing solar observations. I concl...

Helioseismology has established the existence of a layer of strong gradients of angular velocity at the base of the solar convection zone. This layer (`tachocline') separates the convection zone exhibiting a strong latitudinal differential rotation from the radiative interior that rotates almost rigidly. Turbulence generated in the tachocline is likely to mix material in the upper radiative zon...
